The Pacific Northwest Journeys of Discovery is an inquiry-based exploratory social studies curriculum directed at middle school students. The curriculum is based on a constructivist model of learning, where the learner directs the studies and constructs meaning from his or her own experiences. The Journeys content is intended to provide the doorway to meaningful research and discovery based on each student's individual interest.  The online activities and tools available on the Pacific Northwest Journeys of Discovery web site are supplemental to the core curriculum and are directed to enhancing the learning process through interactive exploration.

This project is using a phased development approach.  Please see the timeline below for further information regarding the website implementation.

Phase 1/January 2003 - Initial launch for curriculum download/pdf files.  Providing a staging site that contains one demo of a completed lesson (reading in html, embedded links within reading, resource link listing) and a demo of the Interactive Map under development.

Phase 2/July 2003 - Launch of dynamic HTML-based content and resource links for use during teacher in-service, Summer 2003 and classroom use, Fall 2003.

Phase 3/January 2004 - Roll out interactive applications that support and enhance the Journeys content.  Continue incorporating Journeys pdf content: Source book, Biomes, Native American Profiles, Mapping, Updates, etc.

Phase 4/June 2004 - Project completion including finalized site applications, dynamic content, collaboration tools, and the initial development of a learning community model.
