Congress approves further exploration of the Missouri River and a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Captains Lewis and Clark are selected to lead the Corps of Discovery expedition and begin their journey on May 14, 1804.
Lesson 1.1: Courage Undaunted President Jefferson petitions Congress to send an exploring party to trace the Missouri River to its source and to find the best water route to the Pacific Ocean.
Lesson 1.2: Meriwether Lewis Captain Lewis is appointed to direct the expedition for his courage undaunted and for possessing a firm purpose which nothing but impossibilities could divert.
Lesson 1.3: William Clark Clark was to prove he was the right choice as joint leader of the expedition.
